Am I the only one who thought that, perhaps, having the Sandy Hook Elementary kids sing “God Bless America” right before this nation’s annual display of ritualized violence and aggression was in a tad poor taste?
God bless America, indeed.

Battle Hymn of the Republic would probably be more appropriate, although maybe not so popular in the South…
Could those fucken kiddes have been any goddamn whiter?
Ouch. I could have done without the knowledge that they did that.

Nice try, Isabel.
Censoring? Pretty weak
I recently read Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which is a novel about Iraq veterans on a tour of the US and is set mostly at a Texas football game. The author draws a lot of biting parallels between our glorification of football and our glorification of war/veterans, and it definitely made this point–that we are increasingly claiming to deprecate violence while actually supporting it. An excellent book, highly recommended (though you’re probably not full of free time right now…)
