A little bit ago I was nursing Tiny Diva and reading through the comments on my blog when I came across this bit of wackaloonery. As I commented in reply, a few years ago this might have riled me up, but not now. In the current blog-o-climate, it’s tired and, well, amateur.
For as sad as I find the whole Womanspace ordeal, and for as vile as I find Henry Gee, I can look at this situation and find one thing that makes me happy – with each passing year the feminist science-o-sphere grows and develops and becomes more firmly established. Women (and men) at all levels, interested in equal participation in science and willing to examine their own biases and misconceptions, contribute to this network and help each other grow. I mean, think of all the people you know just by being in this space. And, while I appreciate that my lack of sleep is probably making me sappier than usual lately, this really does make me happy. A few years ago a post like that might have ruffled my feathers more, but now it’s like trying to take down a redwood with a vegetable peeler. Posts like that just don’t feel as dangerous. Posts like that are no longer the loudest voice, except for in a few dark, seedy places.
